The American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery is a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Requirements for Recertification

I. General
  1. Applicants for recertification must hold a certificate issued by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the time of their applications for recertification. Expiration of a certificate will not disqualify a candidate for recertification. However the applicant can not claim certification in the interim.

  2. Applicants must be in the active practice or teaching of surgery; hold a valid registered, full and unrestricted license to practice; hold privileges to practice surgery in hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), or such other hospitals as judged acceptable to the Board.

  3. Applicants must present a statement of professional and moral character from the chief of surgery in those hospitals in which practice privileges are exercised, or from the president, chief of medical staff, or similar official.

  4. Applicants must submit a list of memberships in local medical or surgical societies, fellowship in the American College of Surgeons or from other regional or national surgical associations.

II. Educational

Each applicant for recertification must accumulate 100 (AMA Physician’s Recognition award level) Category I credit hours of approved postgraduate medical education in general or colorectal surgery over the two years preceding the date of application.

  1. Category I includes programs such as the annual meetings and postgraduate programs of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. These organizations are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing education for physicians. Under appropriate sponsorship these may include such activities as lecture series, grand rounds, teaching rounds, departmental scientific meetings, seminars, workshops, and self-assessment examinations such as SESAP or CARSEP. Conferences at local institutions will be accepted only if accredited for Category I by the ACGME.

  2. Self instructional materials will not be accepted for continuing medical education credit. Programs initiated and sponsored by individuals or commercial organizations will not be accepted. The Board expects the applicant to abide by the honor system when recording and submitting CME experience.

III. Operative Review

Applicants will submit to the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery a practice review consisting of consecutive operative cases for the year preceding application.

The listing should reflect the experience at all major hospitals where the applicant holds surgical privileges. The board expects the applicant to abide by the honor system when recording and submitting operative experience.

IV. Examination

The examination for recertification will be given at appropriate intervals at the discretion of the Board. The date, time, and place will be provided to interested applicants seeking recertification. An applicant will be admitted to the recertification process after satisfactory completion of the preliminary requirements of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery in force at the time of receipt of the application. All credentials, including listing of the continuing medical education credits, a completed practice profile, and evaluation of surgical qualifications must be accepted by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. When the requirements have been met, applicants will be notified of their admissibility to the examination.

If an applicant has not been successful in completing the entire process of recertification, including the examination, within two years from the original approval of the application for recertification, it will be necessary to reestablish all credentials by submission of a new application and supporting documentation.
